Fire risk from down-lights can be averted
24/Jul/2007
Down-lights need not present a fire hazard if insulation and down-lights are installed correctly, the Insulation Council of Australia and New Zealand (ICANZ) said today.
Dennis D'Arcy, ICANZ President said that recent media reports of house fires being caused by ceiling insulation catching fire from coming into contact with hot halogen down-lights were of concern.
"The correct method of installing insulation in conjunction with down-lights is clearly set out in Australian Standard AS 3999," Mr D'Arcy said.
"Minimising fire risk is relatively easy, but it's important that homeowners understand the differences between the insulation products that are available," he said.
In all cases the insulation must be installed in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions
Products with loose fibres that can blow around in the attic space, especially if wind driven ventilators are installed, should be used in strict accord with the manufacturer's guidelines.
Special guards are required around down-lights and should be regularly checked to ensure they haven't moved. Preferably, fully enclosed down-light covers should be installed.
"Insulation batts are bonded into a fixed shape during their manufacture and should not move around or change shape once installed. They do not require additional barriers to protect them against contact with down lights. Where necessary, insulation batts can also be easily trimmed to allow the required free airspace around electrical fittings so heat can dissipate.
"Where homeowners have concerns about fire safety, some insulation batts are also non-combustible," Mr D'Arcy said.
Mr D'Arcy added, "Insulation, correctly installed, is the single most effective way of improving energy efficiency in the home and makes home life much more comfortable. Properly installed, insulation is a low cost, safe, and highly beneficial material that cuts greenhouse gas emissions and lowers heating and cooling bills".
