ICANZ welcomes energy efficiency initiatives in Queensland's 'ClimateSmart 2050' strategy

The Insulation Council of Australia and New Zealand (ICANZ) today welcomed the energy efficiency initiatives announced in the Queensland Government's new ClimateSmart 2050' strategy.
Dennis D'Arcy, ICANZ President, said that government incentives for improving the energy efficiency of Queensland buildings will deliver significant energy savings and greenhouse gas emission reductions in the state.
"The most sustainable energy is energy that is saved, and the recognition by the Queensland Government of the important role that energy efficient buildings can play in addressing climate change is sound policy that will achieve results," Mr D'Arcy said.
"The $7.5 million set aside for retrofitting energy efficient measures, such as insulation, into some residential homes, the $55 million allocated to improve the energy efficiency of small and medium businesses, and mandated 4 Star energy efficiency for new commercial buildings are all steps in the right direction for Queensland," he said.
Mr D'Arcy said that Australia had much to do before the energy efficiency of its buildings reached parity with other industrialised nations.
"Forty per cent of Australian homes have no ceiling insulation. So improving the energy efficiency of uninsulated Australian homes is a practical and cost-effective way of achieving substantial and immediate abatement of greenhouse gas emissions," he said.
